Lite Backpack 40L
FAQ
How many days can I travel with the Lite?
The Lite 40L holds about 7–10 days of clothing, similar to the Pro, but with a lighter, simpler build. If you do laundry once per week, you can travel forever with it.
Is the Lite comfortable when fully packed?
Yes, the Lite is built for comfort, featuring padded shoulder straps and back panel, a weight-bearing hip belt, and load lifters. This advanced suspension system transfers 80% of your pack's weight from your shoulders to your hips for an easier, more comfortable carry.
The Lite fits 19-21 inch torsos. For a more flexible fit, try the height-adjustable Pro 40L.
Which Tortuga backpack should I choose if I’m considering the Lite?
Choose the Lite if you want the same capacity as the Pro in a lighter-weight backpack and don't mind less organization, weather-resistance, and size adjustability.
Is the Lite carry on compliant?
Yes, the Lite 40L meets both US and international carry on size limits. The Lite is 22 x 14 x 8 inches (55 x 35 x 20 cm) and always fits in the overhead bin. The Lite's dimensions maximize both your packing space and your bag's carry-on-compatibility across airlines.
Is the Lite lightweight?
Yes, the Lite weighs just 3.5 lb (1.6 kg), a full pound less than the Pro.
Does the Lite have the same adjustable suspension as the Pro 40L?
No, the Lite has a fixed torso fit designed for 19–21 inch torsos. The Pro 40L has a fully adjustable suspension that fits nearly any torso length. If you aren't sure of your torso length, check our fit guide.
Who is the Lite right for?
The Lite is designed for travelers with a medium to long torso (19–21 inches) who want to travel lighter and prefer a more streamlined bag. It's a better fit if weight is a priority or if you don't need the Pro's organization and adjustability. If you're between bags or unsure of your torso length, the Pro's adjustable suspension gives you more room for error.

Customer Reviews
This 40L carry-on backpack excels at one-bag travel with its clamshell opening, comfortable padded straps, and spacious interior. Customers praised "excellent quality," lightweight design, and effective waist belt for weight distribution. Some noted it feels heavy when fully packed, and a few desired more compression straps and external pockets. Overall, highly rated for international trips.
I just completed my first journey with the Lite 40L; a week-long trip to California for an ultra marathon. This backpack rocks! I was able to pack an ample amount of regular clothing and running gear (trail shoes; cowbells, water vest etc.) for a 7 day trip with the assumption I would launder after my race on day three. Carry-on with no difficulty as it was light to lift and easily fit in the overhead. The pack itself was very comfortable and I only rarely used the hip belt; all straps stowed very well with ease. Easy to handle in duffle/briefcase mode for short transfers. All materials felt and performed like quality and its a beautiful pack too. I hope to get a lifetime (for me thats only about 30 more years) of use out of this wonderful pack. My only gripe or design choice I would change is the orientation of the front flat pocket zipper. I wish it were on the opposite side so I could access the pocket in briefcase mode and while the bag is in full open clamshell mode. Thats my only issue. 4.95 stars. Thank you Tortuga!
This bag is amazing! I’m surprised not only by the quality but also the attention to the smallest of details. Every zipper, every strap, every pocket and every thread is perfect. The bag is made up of a Nylon material that is water resistant and extremely durable, it’s lightweight and comfortable to wear and carry. It’s small enough to be considered a carry on when traveling but large enough to carry everything I need for an extended weekend. I do not pack lightly, I’m a what if I need… kinda gal. I’m trying to become a less is more kinda gal but it’s easier said than done. This bag is built to last, it’s simple yet sophisticated! Definitely 5-star quality, value and functionality, highly recommend!
I first saw this backpack I was disappointed with its size. I thought it seemed way too small for an over-packer like me. But wow! I was able to get everything I wanted for a long weekend with room to spare.I packed four pairs of pants, two T-shirts two tank tops, two lightweight, long sleeves pair of shorts, two pairs of sandals, socks, underwear, bra, baseball hat, make up bag hair straightener and a last minute jacket shoved in the laptop sleeve. WITH ROOM TO SPARE. This backpack has padded, removable waist straps and the backpack straps unclip and can be tucked into a back pouch, allowing it to be checked at an airport. It is a heavy due to the firm, padded back and the padded straps but the quality with which this bag is made it is clearly meant for durable travel. I can’t wait to test this bag out in more trips!
The Tortuga 40L Travel Backpack Lite, Black - Large Carry-On Travel Backpack is extremely well made and easy to pack/use. The capacity is larger than it appears, and even better if you use vacuum bags (honestly, they should include one with the product at this price point). My only challenge is that it's a limited use case in terms of replacing another bag for travel. If I'm traveling for a long trip and need a bit of extra space beyond my checked bag, this is a good solution. But if I'm traveling for a short trip, I'd rather have a rolling carry-on case than have to wear this back-pack. That's a matter of personal preference of course, just be aware. For the price, you can get a full set of rolling luggage, so it's a bit expensive, but I expect it'll withstand decades of trips.
I was very surprised by this backpack! The construction is super nice! The straps are very comfortable, and the size is amazing for everything you would need for a couple of days on a trip. Everything opens up nicely to be able to access everything inside and organize. It is very light and easy to travel with. Worth every penny! Highly recommend!
I was lucky enough to order both the Tortuga 40L Travel Backpack PRO and the Tortuga 40L Travel Backpack LITE. I am posting the same review for both products so that you can compare the two products. TLDR: These 2 bags are intended for two different types of travelers, but in my opinion, they both deserve 5 stars for meeting the needs of their respective travelers.I believe the PRO is designed for someone that is traveling, perhaps for work, and they want ONE bag to carry everything. The internal pockets provide many options for organizing all the extras you need at the office, i.e. mouse, power cord, notebooks, pens, chargers. You’re ok with taking this bag with you into the office – perfect for a streamlined travel experience for 1-3 days.I believe the LITE is for travelers that don’t need a lot of internal organization in the pack (and perhaps not traveling for work) OR has a separate bag for their computer and office peripherals. The LITE has a generous laptop/tablet sleeve, but you’d have to find space for the peripherals. The LITE feels both lighter in weight and features, but that does not indicate a decrease in quality. In general, the quality and fit and finish on both products is outstanding. I worked in a backpacking/outdoor store for 8 years, outfitting and fitting hundreds of backpacking backpacks for hikers ready to hit the trail, and both are high-quality packs. There is not a single loose thread/seam or flaw as far as I can tellIn backpacks meant for hiking, there is usually a metal or polycarbonate frame that transfers the weight of the backpack on to a padded hip belt, then transferring the weight to your hip bones. A properly fitted pack puts almost no weight on your shoulders. Both the PRO and the LITE have frames, adjustable shoulder straps and a hip belt, meaning these are packs that when adjusted properly, would allow you to comfortably wear them on your back while walking around a city while sightseeing.FEATURESBackpacking Frame, Straps, Hip Belts, and HandlesBoth have frames, though the frame on the PRO feels sturdier than the LITE, indicating to me that a heavier load would feel more comfortable in the PRO than the LITE.Both have adjustable padded hip belts, but the pads on the PRO are bigger than those on the LITE. The 2 pads on the PRO each have a zippered pocket for small items. The LITE does not have pockets on its hip pads. There are comparable adjustable sternum straps on both, and both packs have load lifter adjust straps on the shoulder harnesses. The LITE appears to be a one-size-fits-most, while the PRO’s straps can be adjusted downwards for people with shorter torsos. If you have a shorter torso, the PRO is the way to go.The handles on both are comparable and very comfortable to grip.External PocketsLITE – One pocket on the back flap that could fit 2 decent paperback novels, or one smaller hardback. “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” would fit, but “The Deathly Hallows” would not. This would also be good for a rain jacket. There is another pocket up top that could handle a decent paperback, Kindle, or things like chargers. There is a clip for storing your keys. There is also a very large fleece-lined pouch accessible from the top that would fit a very large laptop or tablet. There is one stretch holder for long and narrow bottles. It would easily accept a 16 oz. soda bottle, but I don’t think one of the larger water bottles would fit. A 32 oz. wide-mouth Nalgene bottle is out of the question.PRO - There is a pouch on the back that would accept books the size of “The Deathly Hallows” AND a light rain jacket, or an 8”x12” pad of paper/notebook. The pouch at the top of the outside is perfect for glasses and a passport, and there is a clip for your keys. The laptop pocket is enormous, with TWO fleece lined pockets – one for a laptop and one for a tablet. There is a separate zippered pouch for chargers, mice etc. and you could probably slip a rain jacket into the bottom of this pocket. There is another flap that opens from the outside, that has holders for pens, cards, pouches and zippered pocket. This main opening would also be good for stuffing outerwear that you need to access quickly, like a fleece sweater. There are TWO bottle holders on the back, but they are both mean for smaller bottles; I think a 16 oz soda bottle would be the most it could hold.Internal StorageThe inside of these packs are similar. There is one main large compartment. On the inside of the flap on the PRO there is ONE zippered compartment for smaller items like underwear and socks. On the LITE, there are TWO zippered pockets on the flap.CapacityBoth of these are listed as 10L packs, but the PRO feels like it is bigger, but this may be an illusion created by the fact that there are so many pockets; if you stuff one pocket full, it will detract from the space available in the other pockets.
This is a great travel bag that strikes the perfect balance between simplicity and functionality. It offers plenty of space for clothing and other travel essentials, making it ideal for weekend trips or longer journeys. The laptop compartment is straightforward but provides solid protection, which is exactly what you need when you're on the move. The shoulder straps are lightly cushioned, offering a comfortable fit even when the bag is fully loaded. There are multiple compartments throughout, making it easy to stay organized and keep items accessible. The overall build quality is excellent – sturdy materials and thoughtful design make this a reliable choice for frequent travelers.
I took this with me on a four-day business trip since I didn’t need to wear a business suit. This backpack is close to the size of a normal carry-on, which is great for those short trips. It has a lot of space for everything you need. That this is a backpack instead of a wheeled suitcase makes this more transportable and frees up a hand. It’s also great because you don’t have to worry about bumping into someone and running over a foot.I like the detachable waist band to help with a heavier load. If what you’re carrying isn’t too heavy, you can just take off the band, and the pack still remains comfortable and properly balanced on your shoulders. The last thing I like about this pack is that it doesn’t have any external zippers. Sometimes the zippers will catch on overhead bin; this just slides right out, and your bag continues to look great!
This Tortuga 40L lightweight travel backpack is perfect for daily commutes or carry on airline travel. It has a clamshell zippered compartment that is 20 inches X 13.5 inches X 5 inches deep. There are also two large mesh zippered compartments for shoes/toiletries, etc. What most impressed me is the large outside zippered compartment that extends the length and width of the bag. This compartment has a soft lining, and is perfect for a large laptop or other electronic devices. There is also a shallow zippered compartment that is large enough for a wallet, ticket, passport, keys, etc. This backpack is perfect for freeing up your hands during check-in, and the size is airline compliant for an overhead bag. I am very impressed overall with the outstanding quality and style of the backpack. It's pricier than some, but keep in mind that you get what you pay for. I am including some pics of me wearing the bag. For reference, I am 4'10" and 120 lbs. It would not look so oversized on an average person.
Great backpack—perfect for travel! It has tons of compartments, which makes organizing everything really easy, from clothes to tech accessories. The material feels sturdy and durable, so I’m confident it’ll hold up well on the go. It’s also surprisingly comfortable to carry, even when fully packed. As someone with lower back problems, I worry about carrying too much on my back, but this bag was comfortable, and the weight distribution was even across my back and shoulders. I had no issues carrying it. I especially appreciate the padded laptop compartment—it feels secure enough that I have no worries bringing my laptop along. Overall, a high-quality, reliable bag that’s definitely worth it for frequent travelers.
Tortuga has a great reputation for quality backpacks and this 40L travel backpack lite does not disappoint. I like its minimalist approach as it fits my approach for carrying everything I need in a backpack. Typically, I would use smaller compartmental bags to store my clothing, etc. As such I don't need tons of different zipper pockets. This unit has very well padded areas for your laptop and an easy access top and side pouches to quick store and retrieve your phone, etc when going through TSA checking. The straps and back are well padded. While this is really meant more for hiking and less about air travel, I ideally would like a sleeve in the back to slide over the handle of a carryon luggage. Otherwise, good quality build.
The 40L Travel Backpack Lite in Black has quickly become my go-to for both short trips and extended travels. Its large capacity makes it an ideal carry-on for both men and women, providing ample space to pack all essentials while still being airline-approved. The design is sleek and functional, offering a perfect balance between style and practicality. One of the key features I appreciate is the dedicated laptop compartment, which keeps my device secure and easily accessible. The backpack is crafted from durable materials, ensuring it can withstand the rigors of travel without showing wear and tear. Comfort is another standout aspect, with padded straps and a well-ventilated back panel that make carrying even a fully loaded bag a breeze.Packing is a straightforward process thanks to its well-thought-out compartments and pockets, which help keep everything organized and within reach. Whether I'm navigating through airports or exploring new cities, this backpack proves to be a reliable travel companion that meets all my needs with ease and efficiency. Overall, it's a highly functional and durable travel backpack that makes every journey more manageable and enjoyable.
First impression is that it looks like a nylon cartop carrier box and, "You can get it in any color you want, as long as it's black."The Lite looks like the 40L Backpack Pro, with a few features missing. The shoulder straps and hip belt are fixed and not adjustable, and the material is Cordura nylon (instead of SHELL200 polyester on the Pro model). There is only 1 bottle carrier instead of 2, and a single slot for a laptop instead of the double slots. It is also a bit lighter, weighing in at 3.41 lbs or 1550g, about 500g or a half pound less than the Tortuga Pro.The exterior material is water repellent 630D CORDURA nylon (CORDURA re/cor™ RN6 Fabric)- a type of recycled nylon. The back is padded with vented nylon and perforated foam along with a spine gap for good air flow.Features:*16” laptop sleeve on the back of the pack*Main compartment interior lower and upper mesh pockets*The bottom of the top mesh interior pocket is gusseted so if full will not push down into the top of the lower mesh pocket.*Zipped top pocket that goes about 6" deep.*Side Pocket on front that goes all the way across (12" across).*One 9" deep side water bottle pocket*Main compartment is about 4" deep.*Carry handles on end and top (long side).*Shoulder straps and hip belt can be tucked behind back padding.*load lifters on top of shoulder straps*sternum (chest) strap (slides up and down for height adjustment)*YKK zippers with lockable main compartment double zipper*The 22"L x 14"W x 8"D size (the 8" Deep is the shoulder straps, 4" compartment, and lid pockets) meets most airline requirements for carry on luggage. Only a couple, such as Asiana, have a 21" length requirement. (7.9"D x 13.8"W x 21.7"H listed measurements)Interior is light colored. I prefer this as it's easier to find things on a light-colored background. It could be more of a medium white to show fewer stains or marks. The shoulder straps are fixed. They will tuck away for carrying like a suitcase, but when the straps are tucked in, they push into the interior taking up space. When the pack is full, it's a tight push to get them in.The padded Waist belt also tucks in behind back padding so no exterior airline bag should be needed if checked.Because everything is fixed, adjustment features are somewhat limited. I'm 6' (183cm) and I could get a fit, but it seemed to be designed for someone shorter. When I got the hip pads down on top of my pelvis, the sternum strap had to be slid down as far as it would go, and it wasn't down quite far enough. The top of the shoulder load straps (load lifters) didn't do much. They needed to be longer and have a loop on the ends to put your thumbs through or pull tight while wearing. It's usable if not a good fit for my size. Since I'm not using it as a trail backpack, it works just fine for just carrying a travel load for short times and distances. There is also a non-tabbed zipper inside the laptop compartment that gives access to a plastic stiffener sheet. I'm not sure why you'd need to remove or replace it, but it is possible. The space behind the back padding isn't designed as a pocket, as small items can fall out the bottom side hip belt strap storage holes, but it can be used for map or pamphlet quick access. The top has a Velcro closure to keep items from falling out.About the only negative has to do with the long-side carry handle and the front lower pocket with the side zipper. If the zipper is accidentally left open and you pick up the pack by this handle, everything will fall out. Putting the zipper on the side with the handle would keep this from happening. It definitely doesn't hold as much as my old rolling carry-on which is now too long with the wheels and handle, and it's not as versatile as my old travel backpack which has extra external pockets that now doesn't meet carry-on dimensions, but this should do for someone wanting a carry-on only bag or travelers looking for a “single bag” solution. As long as I don't need a suit, the rest fits for non-winter trips. Even though it's not using Tortuga's top of the line Shell200 polyester material, the Cordura nylon is plenty durable. From the Tortuga website, it states that the pack has a World-wide lifetime warranty. "If it’s our fault, we’ll fix it."All materials are recycled.4 stars - It's well-made, carry-on size, recycled material, & durable, but the fit could be better for its premium price. It's still very usable for a 6 footer.
